Description

Hayne Barton is a house dating from the early 17th century, with 20th-century renovations. It is constructed from colourwashed rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with a thatched roof that is hipped at the ends. There is a rendered stack at the left end and a lateral projecting stack with set-offs at the rear. The house has a single depth layout, showing some evidence of a two-room and through passage plan, with the hall heated by the lateral stack. A 19th-century stair has been inserted in the passage, and the lower end has been rebuilt.

The building is two storeys high and features an asymmetrical three-window front, with a gabled thatched glazed porch on the left. The original entrance to the passage may have been to the right of the porch. The windows are 20th-century fenestration, consisting of two-light casements with diagonal leaded panes, and the embrasures have been altered. There is also a 20th-century French window on the front at the right. A change in plane at the rear likely indicates the division between the former passage and lower end, along with two 20th-century rear additions.

Inside, the hall fireplace has been reduced in size with a new lintel, although an earlier lintel may still exist above. The principal rafters visible in the first-floor rooms appear to be straight. Hayne Barton is part of a notable group with the nearby church and Shepherds.
