Description

A group of six headstones from the 18th century is located about 22 meters south of the porch of the Church of St Constantine in Milton Abbot. These headstones are made of slate and arranged in a row of four facing east, with the outer two back to back with two others.

The southernmost headstone commemorates John Lang, who died in 1763, and Phillippa Lang, who died in 1777. It features a nowy head with canted corners and a stylized pot of lilies carved at the top. The next headstone to the north honors Benjamin Woodman, who died in 1745, and has a similar design, including a border of stylized grapes and thistles around the head, with an hourglass at the apex and a verse below the inscription.

The following headstone commemorates Richard Woodman, who died in 1760, and is also similar in design, featuring a cherubim carved at the top. The northernmost headstone honors Stephen Johns, who died in 1742, and has a nowy head with a skull and crossbones carved in relief at the top.

Facing west and back to back with the John Lang headstone is a headstone with a segmental head commemorating Grace Oxenham of Quither, who died in 1782. Back to back with the Stephen Johns headstone is another headstone with a segmental head commemorating Mary Lang of Quither, who died in 1799.
