Description
Nos 21 and 22 on The Parade are a pair of estate cottages designed in 1909 by Sir Edwin Lutyens for the Duke of Bedford. They are part of the planned village centre of Milton Abbot. The cottages are built from Hurdwick stone rubble and feature slate roofs, with the main roof gabled at both ends and three stone stacks. The architectural style is a vernacular revival, though they are less cottage-like than other Lutyens buildings nearby the churchyard.
The cottages have a T-plan layout, with the main block heated by two stacks on the ridge and a central front projecting wing also heated from a ridge stack. They are two storeys high, with a symmetrical front elevation arranged in a 1:2:1 pattern. The roof of the main block slopes down to the first floor level on both sides. The wing features a half-hipped roof at the front, with the verges also swept down to the first floor level.
Large hipped dormers project from the left and right sides of the wing and are slate-hung at the front. The front doors are located to the left and right in the angles between the main block and the wing. The main block has small rectangular windows under the eaves on both sides. The wing includes two ground floor two-light casements and two three-light first floor casements set in deep reveals, along with two similar two-light casements on the left and right returns.
