Description

Fishleigh Down Farmhouse is a C17 farmhouse, possibly with earlier origins, and featuring an 18th-century addition. The farmhouse has walls constructed of plastered rubble and cob, with some rebuilding in concrete blocks, and exposed rubble to the adjoining barn. The roof is thatched, gabled at the left end and hipped to the right. A rendered rubble chimney stack is at the left gable end, and a rendered brick axial stack is present. The original layout is unclear, but it likely started as a two-room plan, with a heating stack at the left end and a later axial stack added to the right. The barn to the right was probably added in the 18th century.

The front of the farmhouse has an asymmetrical arrangement of three windows, with C20 two-light casement windows. A C20 gabled porch with a plank door is located to the left of centre. The barn has a cart entrance on its left side, and two windows to the right. A catslide roofed leanto projects from the barn’s right side, and a C20 leanto extends from the left-hand side of the farmhouse. The interior was inaccessible during the survey, but may contain interesting features, including the roof structure.
