Description

The Morris Monument is a Grade II listed structure located in Hatherleigh, erected in 1860 by the firm E. B. Stephens of London. This very large obelisk is made of granite ashlar and features a bronze bas-relief on the front of the pedestal, which depicts Lieutenant Colonel William Morris being carried from the battlefield of Balaclava. Morris, born in Fishleigh in Hatherleigh, distinguished himself during the Battle of Balaclava, known for the Charge of the Light Brigade. He later served as Assistant Adjutant-General during the Indian Mutiny, where he tragically died of sunstroke at the age of 38 in 1858. The obelisk was funded by public subscription to honor Morris's achievements and his safe return from Balaclava.
