Description
Lake Farmhouse and the adjoining outbuilding to the south are notable structures, with the older part possibly dating back to the early 16th century if its screen is original. The current farmhouse likely originates from the 18th century. The buildings feature rendered rubble and cob walls, with the farmhouse topped by a gable-ended thatch roof, while the outbuilding has a corrugated iron roof. A rendered rubble stack is located at the right gable end of the farmhouse.
The original house, now serving as the outbuilding, follows a 2 or 3 room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end on the left. The hall contains a stack at its higher end, and if there was an inner room beyond, it has since been rebuilt as the present farmhouse. The lower end appears to have been divided into two service rooms based on the evidence of the screen, although it is unclear if there was an open hall since the original roof timbers are all from the 20th century. The current farmhouse was likely added in the 18th century at right angles to the original house, featuring a 2-room plan with a central entry hall.
The exterior of the farmhouse is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has two windows, featuring 3-light metal frame casements. A late 20th-century plank and glazed door is located to the left. The long outbuilding wing extends from the left-hand end and has a two-window front. The right-hand first-floor window is a 17th-century 4-light chamfered wooden mullion window, with a 20th-century 3-light casement below it. A 19th-century plank door is positioned at the left end, to the right of the centre, and there is a loading hatch above the left-hand end.
Inside the former house, now the outbuilding, there are heavy chamfered and hollow step-stopped cross beams in the right-hand room, along with an open fireplace featuring a chamfered wooden lintel. At the lower side of the passage, remnants of an early 16th-century high-quality plank and muntin screen can be found, although the planks have been removed. This screen includes a moulded headbeam and moulded muntins, as well as two shouldered-head wooden doorframes that are also moulded.
