Description
Smythen Cleave is a cottage dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with a 20th-century addition. It features plastered cob walls and a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The cottage has a two-room plan, with the entrance leading into the larger heated room on the right. The exterior is two storeys high and has a regular two-window front. On the first floor to the left, there is a 19th-century two-light small-paned casement window, and below it, a three-light window. To the right, there is a 20th-century three-light casement window. A gabled 20th-century porch with a stable-type door is located to the right of the centre. At the rear, there is a two-storey 20th-century addition. Inside, there is an open fireplace with a roughly chamfered cambered wooden lintel and an oven. The roof structure includes insubstantial straight principal rafters resting on the wall-plate.
