Description

Smythen Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid to later 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of rendered cob walls, with a thatched roof that is hipped at the left end and gabled at the right. The house has an axial brick chimney and another at the right gable end, built on a projecting base of rendered rubble. Originally, the house had a two-room plan with a central entrance, both rooms being heated in the 18th century. A single-room, unheated addition was built at the left-hand end, which may have formerly been an outbuilding. A 19th-century outshut extends from the rear. The front facade is asymmetrical, with a four-window arrangement of 20th-century 2 and 3-light casement windows; there are no windows on the left-hand end of the house. A 20th-century glazed door is located to the left and one to the right of centre, both set behind an open-fronted 20th-century lean-to porch. A lean-to extends along the rear wall, with a catslide roof. Inside the left-hand room, substantial ceiling beams are visible. The roof timbers may be of interest, but were inaccessible during the survey. The group value of this building lies in its representation of a traditional farmstead.
