Description
28 South Street is a two-storey building dating from 1735, featuring a five-window red brick front. It has a string course and a heavy eaves cornice supported by brackets. The roof includes three pedimented dormers, with the central one being segmental. An original lead down-pipe is adorned with an enriched rain-water head that displays the initials "CGM" and the date. The building has sash windows, and the doorway is topped with a shell hood on modillion brackets. The underside of the hood showcases fine plaster work, including a central cartouche surrounded by grouped weapons. This house is nearly identical to No 28 Bridgeland Street in Bideford, which is attributed to Nathaniel Gascoyne and dates to 1695, although the Bideford example has lost its original doorway.
Inside, the ground floor features a panelled front room with an exceptionally fine ceiling, which includes a round central panel depicting a group of musical instruments in high relief, similar to the ceiling at Denham Place in Buckinghamshire from around 1693. The rest of the interior has been altered.
