Description
Nos 45/46 and 47 are two cottages built on a steep hillside, constructed from rubble and brick, mostly rendered and whitewashed, with a slated roof divided into three distinct sections. Two sections have gabled ends, while the center section features half-hipped ends, and there are four brick chimney stacks.
The plan consists of three parts: two rectangular ranges on the left and a smaller square range on the right that is set back. There is a passage with a room above to the right, leading to irregular internal arrangements. The cottages have two floors and an attic, featuring a total of seven sash windows—three on the left range, three on the right range, and one in the center. The windows include 18th and 19th century two-light 12-pane casements, along with four small two-light casements in the attic's raking dormers.
Access to the right cottage is via two flights of steep stone steps, leading to a plank door on the right return. The left cottage has a wide passageway beneath it, which serves as the main village street, with three doorways under this passageway—one on each side of the street—and two additional doorways accessed by a curving flight of eight stone steps with a wooden handrail. The doors are either 19th century panelled or plank doors, and all windows and doors date from the 19th or 20th century.
Inside No. 46, the ground floor features chamfered ceiling beams, plank doors, and a fireplace with a bracketed mantle.
