Description
55 The Quay is a house that was rebuilt in 1898, as noted by the datestone on the front, although the site has an earlier history. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and features a slate roof with wide eaves, decorative ridge tiles, gabled ends, and large brick stacks at the ends.
The house has three storeys and an almost symmetrical front with three windows. The second floor has predominantly two-light casements with square-paned leaded lights. The first-floor openings have cambered heads and brick voussoirs; to the right is a two-light window with square-paned headed lights and a transom light, while to the left are a pair of half-glazed French windows, and in the center is a half-glazed door. A balcony on the first floor has a fretwork balustrade supported by four posts, and there are three casements on the ground floor that follow a similar pattern.
Inside, the fish cellar has been altered to serve as a kitchen. The first floor features an 18th-century chimneypiece and door. The attic floor retains 18th-century bead-moulded beams and joists, along with a two-panelled door.
