Description
The gazebo at Rosemoor Gardens is a structure dating from around the mid 18th century, possibly 1752, when it was originally located at Palmer House. It was re-erected in 1999. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a slate-hung first floor and features a hipped slate roof adorned with lead rolls at the hips, a small ball finial, and a wrought-iron weather-vane at the apex. A short brick chimney stack is located at the side.
The gazebo has an octagonal plan and stands two storeys tall. The front facade includes a canted window on the first floor with three 12-pane sash windows featuring thick glazing bars, and a smaller window on the ground floor. At the rear, there are stone steps with a restored iron balustrade leading to a first-floor doorway that has a panelled door and a restored wooden porch. The first floor also has renewed 12-pane sash windows on either side of the doorway.
Inside, the gazebo features a small stone fireplace with a slate hearth, flanking china cupboards with panelled doors, panelling below the bay window, and a moulded dado rail. This gazebo was originally part of Palmer House, located on New Street in Great Torrington, which was built for Sir John Palmer, the brother-in-law of Sir Joshua Reynolds, who visited the house along with Dr. Johnson.
