Description

Bocombe Farmhouse is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse located in Parkham. It is constructed of coursed slatestone rubble with rendered cob to the first floor, and has a gabled artificial slate roof with rendered brick ridge and right end stacks. The building follows a three-unit plan, incorporating a lobby-entry to the left of the central room, and an under-roof service range to the rear. It is two storeys high and has a four-window front. A 20th century porch and door are present. The windows are 20th century two-light casements with glazing bars, set beneath timber lintels. A 20th century single-storey extension adjoins the left side. A 19th century plank door provides rear access. The interior features three ground-floor open fireplaces, two of which have stop-chamfered bressummers. Split and sawn oak joists are visible, along with an 18th century A-frame roof, featuring tie beams, pegged collars, side struts, and a ridge purlin set in a crossed apex. It is notable that the house was built with a lobby-entry and a widely-pitched roof, a relatively uncommon feature in Devon architecture.
