Description
The Town Alms, located at Nos 90 and 92 on New Street, dates from 1735. The building is a two-storey structure with a stucco finish, likely built around 1829. The first floor features one sash window, while the hipped roof is covered with old grouted slates. On the ground floor, there is a doorway and a shop window that includes contemporary glazing bars, along with a fanlight that has central glazing bars.
The Town Alms is part of a group that includes Nos 48, 48A, 50, 72, 80, 82, the Baptist Chapel, Nos 90, 92, 110, 112, and 130. The descriptive notes indicate that a stone range containing eight dwellings, dated 1843, is set back behind a front court. This range is constructed of coursed rubble with rendered dressings and features two porch winds with gables and finials, as well as Tudor doorways with hood moulds. The roof is slate, and there are ranges of chimneys set diagonally. The building was restored in 1933, and the leaded windows are likely from this restoration.
