Description
The Appledore War Memorial is a monument dedicated to the First and Second World Wars, erected in 1923, with names of those who fell in the Second World War added around 1949.
Made of granite, the memorial features a plain obelisk on a square plinth with a four-tier stepped base. The names of the fallen from the First World War are inscribed around the plinth, while those from the Second World War are on the first tier of the base. The east elevation displays the inscription: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ APPLEDORE HEROES/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918’. Below this are the names of Royal Navy personnel who died in service during the First World War, and on the base are the names of those lost in the Royal Navy during the Second World War. The north face lists the names of Army personnel who fell in both World Wars. The west face includes names from the Mercantile Marine for the First World War and the Merchant Navy for the Second World War. The south face bears names from the Mercantile Marine and Army for the First World War, along with names from the Royal Air Force for the Second World War.
The memorial is surrounded by a set of modern metal posts linked by chains, which are not included in the listing.
