Description

Shebbear College South East Range is a college building, believed to have been the original headmaster's house, dating from 1841 and remodelled around 1929. It features rendered stone walls and a hipped slate roof, with an axial brick stack and another at the left end. The plan has been altered in the 20th century but appears to be single depth with four main rooms, an entrance, and a stair hall to the left of center, although the stairs may not be in their original position.

The exterior is three storeys high with an asymmetrical five-window front and seven windows on the second floor, all dating from the early 20th century. To the left and left of center are two canted three-light bay windows with 8:16:8-pane sashes. To the right of the right-hand bay are tripartite sash windows. Between the two bays is a rendered Neo-classical fluted surround to the doorway, which has a part-glazed door. Above the doorway is a 24-pane sash window with a low iron balustrade in front and a shallow arched recess above it featuring a semi-circular plaster relief in a radial fanlight design. The second-floor windows are all late 19th century or early 20th century small-paned casements.

Shebbear College was established as the principal school and training college for the Bible Christian Society, which originated at nearby Lake Farm. The interior is not fully accessible and has evidently been much altered in the early 20th century, but it likely retains the original chimneypiece and flanking cupboards with panelled doors in the room to the right of the hall.
