Description
SHEBBEAR SS 40 NW 6/71 Shebbear College - south-east - range GV II College building, reputedly the original headmaster's house. 1841 remodelled probably circa 1929. Rendered stone walls. Hipped slate roof. Axial brick stack and 1 at left end. Plan: altered in C20 but apparently single depth with 4 main rooms, entrance and stairhall to left of centre but stairs may not be in original position and same subdivision has taken place. Exterior: 3 storeys. Asymmetrical 5-window front, 7 to the 2nd floor. All windows early C20. To left and left of centre are 2 canted 3-light bay windows with 8:16:8- pane sashes. To right of the right-hand bay are tripartite sash windows. Between the 2 bays is a rendered Neo-classical fluted surround to doorway with part-glazed door. Above it is a 24-pane sash window with low iron balustrade in front of it and a shallow arched recess above it with semi-circular plaster relief in radial fanlight design. 2nd floor windows are all late C19 or early C20 small-paned casements. Shebbear College was founded as the principal school and training college for the Bible Christian Society which originated at nearby Lake Farm. Interior: not fully accessible and evidently much altered in early C20 but probably original chimneypiece and flanking cupboards with panelled doors survive in room to right of hall.
