Description

Higher Crabdown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, possibly with earlier origins, and includes a 20th-century addition. The building features plastered cob walls and a gable-ended thatch roof, supported by three brick stacks—one axial and one at each end on projecting rubble bases. The layout consists of a three-room-and-through-passage plan, with the lower end located to the right. The hall stack is positioned against the passage, while the lower room and inner rooms are heated by gable end stacks.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has four windows. The windows are primarily 19th-century small-paned casements, with two-light casements on the first floor and three-light casements on the ground floor. The two right-hand windows are late 20th-century two-light casements without glazing bars. A 20th-century gabled porch is located to the right of centre, featuring a glazed door that leads into the passage. Additionally, there is a 20th-century two-storey addition projecting from the left-hand end of the farmhouse.

Adjacent to the farmhouse is a barn, likely dating from the 18th century, which extends in line with the house. The interior has been largely altered by 20th-century modernization, but some original features remain, such as chamfered and hollow step-stopped cross beams in the hall. The fireplaces have been blocked, and the roof timbers are not visible on the first floor and are unlikely to be original.
