Description

ASHREIGNEY SS 61 NW 2/9 Higher Crabdown Farmhouse and barn to north-west II Farmhouse. Early C17 possibly with earlier origins, C20 addition. Plastered cob walls. Gable-ended thatch roof. 3 brick stacks, one axial and one at each end on projecting rubble bases. Plan: 3-room-and-through-passage plan with lower end to the right. Hall stack backs onto the passage, lower room and inner rooms are heated by gable end stacks. Small C20 wing built at front of left-hand end. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 4-window front of C19 small-paned casements, 2- light on first floor, 3-light on ground floor. The 2 right-hand windows are late C20 2-light casements without glazing bars. C20 gabled porch to right of centre with glazed door behind leading to passage. C20 2-storey addition projecting from left-hand end. Beyond it a probably C18 barn extends in line with the house. Interior features have mainly been concealed by C20 modernisation but chamfered and hollow step-stopped cross beams survive in the hall. The fireplaces are blocked. The roof timbers do not show at all on the first floor and are unlikely to be original.
