Description

1-4, Church Terrace is a row of four cottages in Broadwoodwidger, dating from the 17th century or earlier, with alterations made circa the late 18th century. The front is built of stone rubble, while the rear has cob on stone rubble footings, acting as the south boundary wall of the churchyard. The roof is slate and gabled at the ends, originally thatched. There are four chimneys: a gable-end stack projecting on the left-hand side, with a bread oven (the stack's shaft was dismantled in the late 20th century); a projecting rear lateral stack with set-offs and a bread oven; and one axial stack.

The original layout may have been a three-room and cross-passage house, with the hall heated by the lateral stack and the lower end and inner rooms by others. The house was likely extended in the 18th century and divided into church almshouses on the right (east) end. The building is two storeys high, with a long, eight-window front. Each cottage has a porch with a sloping slate roof supported by stone cheeks and small viewing apertures. Three buttresses are present on the front, and there is regular fenestration of sash windows with glazing bars.

The interiors of Nos 2 and 3 (likely the original hall and inner room) feature chamfered cross beams; No 3’s beams have run-out stops. The fireplace to the lateral stack is partly blocked, potentially concealing earlier features. The roofspace has not been inspected, but may be of interest. The cottages form an attractive group with the parish church.
