Description
This barn, located approximately 10 metres to the south-west of Snape Farmhouse, likely dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It is constructed of uncoursed stone rubble and features a hipped corrugated iron roof, which was originally thatched. The barn is oriented roughly east-west, with the ground sloping down to the west. There are opposed cart entrances on the north and south sides, each with wooden lintels and pairs of 20th-century boarded sliding doors. A boarded loft door is situated in the south wall to the left. Inside, the barn has a seven-bay roof supported by trusses that include principals, pegged collars, and later nailed tie-beams. There is a half-height stone wall separating the barn from the loft to the west. Historically, there was a horse engine house, likely built in the mid to late 19th century, located to the north of the barn, but this has since been demolished. The barn is part of a small farmstead group that includes Snape Farmhouse.
