Description
Lundy North Lighthouse, including the engine house and accommodation block, was built in 1897 for Trinity House. The structure is made of granite, rendered and blocked out, with flat roofs behind parapets. The lighthouse features a squat, tapered circular tower topped with a large moulded cornice, an iron balustrade, and a large lantern with lattice glazing and a dome. It has small rectangular windows with thick projecting lintels and sills, and a small tablet bearing the Trinity House arms on the south side. The doorway is located in the built-in passageway on the south side, which ramps up to the single-storey accommodation block at a higher level. This block has a stepped cornice and a blocking course that continues around the porch at the south end. On the north side, there is a single-storey square engine house with a similar parapet and a semi-circular bay at the north end, which has a late 20th-century extension.
The North and Lundy South Lighthouses were constructed when the Old Lighthouse was abandoned in 1897 due to frequent fog obscuring it, despite its high elevation. The North Lighthouse stands 165 feet above high water and cost £45,000 to build. It has been unmanned since 1978 and is now controlled from the South Lighthouse. The interior has not been inspected.
