Description
The Fog Signal Battery, built around 1861 for Trinity House, is a historic fog signal facility located on Lundy Island. This building is constructed from dressed granite and features a gable-ended design, although it is now roofless. It consists of a small, single-cell rectangular structure that projects from the cliffs.
The exterior is one storey high, with the gable end facing the sea showcasing a square splayed gun-port and granite raking buttresses at each corner. Each side of the building has a small square window that is splayed on the inside, while the side facing the cliff includes a wide doorway. All openings are topped with granite lintels.
Inside, all wall openings have wooden frames, and the floor is paved with brick, featuring granite tracks that slope down to the gun-port for gun-carriages. Outside the battery, two George IV 18-pounder cannons are displayed on iron carriages, flanking the structure.
Historically, the Old Lighthouse, located 470 feet above sea level, was often obscured by fog, prompting the construction of this fog signal battery in 1861. The installation included cottages for the gunners and additional facilities. In 1878, Trinity House replaced the guns with guncotton rockets, and by 1881, there were considerations to move the lower lights of the Old Lighthouse to the Battery. Various signaling methods, including bells, hooters, and whistles, were tested, but both the Old Lighthouse and the Battery were ultimately abandoned in 1897 when the North and South Lundy Lighthouses were built.
