Description

Millcombe House is a house built in 1836, likely designed by William Hudson Heaven, who owned the island. The building is constructed of stone, rendered and blocked out, with a lead roof behind a parapet that features a central valley to collect rainwater. It has rendered axial stacks topped with square yellow clay pots. The layout is double depth, with a narrower service block at the back. The front has three rooms: a central entrance hall with a staircase behind it, flanked by a drawing room on the left and a dining room on the right. The kitchen is located behind the dining room, with additional service rooms behind the drawing room and stairs.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a symmetrical arrangement of bays on the southeast front, with a 1:3:1 bay configuration. The central three bays project forward and are topped with a pediment, featuring a band below the parapet. The central doorway is double recessed, with a rectangular overlight that has diamond and margin panes, leading to glazed and flush panel double doors topped with a shallow pediment on console brackets. There are narrow flanking windows with margin glazing bars, and a similar arrangement above, but with a blind central window. The left and right sides of the front are set back and feature double recessed windows with 20th-century 16-pane sashes, while the ground floor on the right retains its original sash. The left and right sides also have similar sashes, but most are blind on the first floor. The rear elevation mirrors the front with a similar 1:3:1 bay configuration but lacks a pediment.

Inside, the original joinery remains intact, including hall doorways with tracered fanlights, panelled doors, and a stick baluster staircase with a column newel behind the hall. There are marble chimneypieces and panelled internal window shutters. The front right room features a moulded plaster ceiling cornice.

William Hunt Heaven purchased the island in 1834 for £9,870.
