Description
Lundy South Lighthouse, built in 1897 for Trinity House, is a lighthouse made of granite that is rendered and blocked out. It features a flat roof behind parapets and has a squat, slightly tapered round tower. Attached to the southeast side of the tower is a single storey square engine room, while a covered passage on the northwest side leads to a rectangular plan single storey accommodation block situated on higher ground.
The exterior showcases small windows on the tower, a large cornice with a cast-iron balustrade, and a large lattice-glazed lantern topped with a weathervane on a cylindrical ventilator. The engine room is a later addition, and the covered passage ramps up to the accommodation block, which has a stepped cornice and a blocking course that conceals the flat roof. The building features sash windows with glazing bars and plank doors.
The interior has not been inspected. The South and Lundy North Lighthouses were constructed when the Old Lighthouse was abandoned in 1897 due to frequent fog obscuring it, despite its height above sea level. The 52-foot tower stands only 175 feet above sea level. Some equipment from the Old Lighthouse was dismantled and reused in the South Lighthouse, but all of it was replaced in 1962.
