Description

Ford Farm Cottage and attached outbuilding is a house dating from the mid-18th century, situated in Alwinton. The house is built of colourwashed coursed slatestone rubble, with a slate roof that is hipped on the left side. A 20th-century brick stack stands at the right end. The original plan comprised two units. The two-storey, symmetrical front facade features a two-window arrangement. A central 20th-century door is sheltered by a gabled stone porch, and the windows are mostly 20th-century two-light casements, with a one-light window positioned above the door. A mid-19th century outshut is attached to the rear. Inside, the cottage has scribed 18th-century joists and A-frame roof trusses with pegged collars. An outbuilding is located to the right, constructed of similar materials with some cob, and includes a one-story section with an attic. It has a late 19th-century brick segmental arch above a plank door on the left side, along with a late 19th-century outshut and a one-story extension to the right. The outbuilding’s interior features 20th-century roof trusses and splayed ventilation slits.
