Description
This is a canal lock located 100 metres north-north-east of Hearders Farmhouse, built in 1824 for George Templer of Stover Park. It is part of the disused Stover Canal, which was originally constructed by James Templer between 1790 and 1792, with engineering by Thomas Gray of Exeter. The lock is made of granite ashlar and features splayed entrances at both the north and south ends. The revetment walls are recessed to accommodate gates inside the lock, with remains of later gates visible only at the north end. There is a small 20th-century steel girder bridge over the south end. The Stover Canal was nearly 2 miles long and connected to the River Teign at Jetty Marsh near Newton Abbot, facilitating the transport of local ball clay to the Staffordshire Potteries and later Haytor granite after the construction of the Haytor granite tramway in 1820.
