Description

Hearders Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with a wing added around 1600 and extensive alterations and additions made over time. It is constructed of rendered stone, possibly with some cob, and has a concrete tile roof with gabled ends. The building features a 3-room plan, which likely originally included a cross or through-passage that has since been altered. The 1600 rear wing creates an L-shape and includes 20th-century single-storey extensions and a porch at the angle.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, with an irregular four-window range on the south front, all featuring 20th-century casements. The original doorway has been blocked and is concealed by render, with the current entrance located in the rear wing and a 20th-century porch in the angle.

Inside, the main range has an early 16th-century four-bay roof, although the left-hand end may have been rebuilt in the 20th century. The remaining three bays contain three trusses with threaded purlins and diagonal ridge side-pegged morticed collars, with the central collar over the hall being cranked. Most of the rafters are intact, and the two bays above the hall are heavily smoke-blackened, with the end trusses closed off with smoke-blackened plaster. The central hall truss is a cruck, possibly a jointed cruck, although the feet of the other three trusses are not visible. The truncated top of the inserted lateral hall stack can be seen in the roof space. A chamfered ceiling beam with step stop is partly visible at the left-hand end. The wing features principals with threaded purlins and a diagonal ridge piece, with morticed collars, though the current collar is lap-jointed. Some rafters remain, and the roof timbers of the wing are not smoke-blackened.
