Description
DODDISCOMBSLEIGH SX 88 NW 2/117 Leigh Cross Cottage 11.2.83 GV II House. C17 or earlier, thoroughly renovated in the C20. Whitewashed rendered cob ; thatched roof, gabled at ends, wing half-hipped at end ; right end stack to main block, axial stack to wing. Plan: L plan, the main block with a heated room at the right end and a rear left stair turret. Rear right wing at right angles to main block with outshut against right side. The internal partitions are said to have been altered rendering the original plan obscure. Exterior: 2 storeys. Tall asymmetrical 4 window front with irregular 1- 2- and 3- light C20 timber casements with glazing bars. The right return of the main block has a very small slit window, probably lighting a stair or former stair. The rear elevation of the main block has a rounded stair turret, a C20 door, 1 first floor and 2 ground floor timber casements with glazing bars. The eaves thatch is eyebrowed over one first floor casement on the inner return of the wing which has 2 ground floor casements and a doorway in the end wall. Interior: not inspected but a large open fireplace with a timber lintel survives in the main block and there may be other features of interest. In a prominent position on the roadside, group value with Playbrook Cottages, Dunsford Parish (q.v.).
