Description

Leigh Cross Cottage is a house that dates from the 17th century or earlier and was thoroughly renovated in the 20th century. It features whitewashed rendered cob and has a thatched roof, gabled at the ends, with a wing that is half-hipped at one end. The main block has a right end stack and an axial stack in the wing. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main block containing a heated room at the right end and a rear left stair turret. The rear right wing is positioned at right angles to the main block and has an outshut against its right side. The internal partitions have been altered, making the original plan unclear.

The exterior is two storeys high and has a tall, asymmetrical front with four windows that are irregularly arranged, featuring 1- to 3-light 20th-century timber casements with glazing bars. On the right side of the main block, there is a very small slit window, likely for a stair or former stair. The rear elevation of the main block includes a rounded stair turret, a 20th-century door, and one first-floor and two ground-floor timber casements with glazing bars. The eaves thatch is eyebrowed over one first-floor casement on the inner return of the wing, which also has two ground-floor casements and a doorway in the end wall.

While the interior has not been inspected, it is noted that a large open fireplace with a timber lintel remains in the main block, and there may be other interesting features. The cottage is prominently located on the roadside and has group value with Playbrook Cottages in Dunsford Parish.
