Description
Splatthayes is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It features whitewashed rendered cob on stone rubble footings and a thatched roof, which is half-hipped at the left end and gabled at the right end, with a half-hipped end on the wing. The building has an L-shaped plan. The main range, which faces the road, is unheated and may have originally served as a service block. It is single depth and consists of three rooms, with a large entrance hall in the center that contains the stair and small service rooms. The rear right wing includes two heated rooms that display late 17th-century carpentry details.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical three-window front that faces the road, featuring a gable to the right of center. There is a wide plank front door to the left of center, likely from the 18th or 19th century. The windows are mostly 1- and 2-light casements, probably from the 19th century, except for an early 19th-century small-pane sash in the gable. The right end of the front elevation is blind. The right return has three first-floor timber sashes with 12 panes, likely from the 20th century, and three ground-floor small-pane timber casements, along with two 20th-century doors.
Inside, both heated rooms in the wing feature chamfered crossbeams with scroll nick stops. The end room has a fireplace, probably from the early 18th century, made with handmade bricks and a rounded back. There was formerly a winder stair adjacent to the fireplace. The roof, likely from the late 17th or 18th century, has principals that are pegged at the apex with nailed collars. Splatthayes is an attractive evolved house situated prominently by the roadside.
