Description

The Old Sunday School is a former Sunday school built around the late 1830s, likely constructed by the Reverend E.E. Coleridge, who was a nephew of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The building is whitewashed and rendered, probably made of stone, and features a slate roof that is gabled at both ends. It is located adjacent to the stable block at the rear of the Old Rectory and consists of a single room with a porch on the north-east side.

The exterior is single-storey, with a gabled porch that has splat bargeboards. On the right side of the porch, there is an arched doorframe with a two-centred arched door, and the front of the porch features a 2-light traceried arched window with a hoodmould, which is likely medieval and may have been relocated from the church when the vestry was added. The rear wall includes a two-centred arched 19th-century door with ornamental strap hinges. The right side of the building has two arched ground floor windows with metal frames and diamond glazing bars, as well as two first-floor lancets with chamfered stone frames and a hoodmould; the stonework may be medieval.

Inside, the building has a barrel ceiling with moulded ribs. The Old Sunday School is an unusual example of an intact antiquarian Gothick Sunday school and holds group value with the church and the Old Rectory.
