Description

Coganhayes is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century or earlier, with claims of documentation from 1521. It has undergone alterations in the 20th century. The building is colourwashed and rendered, likely constructed from cob on stone footings, and features a thatched roof with a plain ridge that is hipped at the ends. There are axial and left end stacks.

The house is oriented end on to the road and has a single depth plan that is three rooms wide, possibly originally with a cross passage to the left of centre. The front door opens directly into the centre room but was formerly positioned further to the left. There are back-to-back fireplaces in the axial stack to the right of centre, which heat the two right-hand rooms. The left end stack may have been added in the 19th or 20th century.

The exterior consists of two storeys and has an asymmetrical four-window front. It features a 20th-century lean-to porch on posts with a red tiled roof, leading to a 19th or 20th-century plank front door. The windows are small timber casements from the 20th century, some of which have glazing bars.

Inside, there is a chamfered crossbeam in the right-hand room, while the centre room has an open fireplace with a chamfered lintel. The roof was not inspected. There may be some confusion in historical documents between this building and Hembury Fort House, which was formerly known as Cockenhayes.
