Description
STOKEINTEIGNHEAD STOKE ROAD (east side), SX 96 NW Stokeinteignhead Nutcombe House 12/409
GV II
House. Probably early C19, possibly a remodelling of an earlier house. Whitewashed plastered red sandstone; concrete tile roof, gabled at ends; end stacks. Plan: Single depth plan, 2 rooms wide, with a central entrance into a stair hall. The single depth arrangement is odd for an early C19 house and suggests a remodelling of an earlier house: the relationship between Nutcombe House and Old Seaway (adjoining at the rear) is unclear. Old Seaway appears to have been a service wing to Nutcombe House at one time, but is said to be a converted barn, designed as a separate dwelling. Exterior: 2 storeys and attic. Tall symmetrical 3 bay front with plain pilasters to left and right and a central granite porch with granite Doric columns and an entablature. Half-glazed C19 front door with a C19 overlight with diamond glaziing bars. Good circa early C19 12-pane sash windows with margin glazing and granite sills. Bullseye windows with projecting architraves ventilate the attic on each return, 2 sash windows to left return. Interior: Not inspected but retains original joinery including panelled shutters and a C19 stair.
