Description

Nutcombe House is a house that likely dates from the early 19th century and may be a remodelling of an earlier structure. It is constructed of whitewashed plastered red sandstone and features a concrete tile roof that is gabled at both ends, with stacks at the ends. The house has a single depth plan that is two rooms wide, with a central entrance leading into a stair hall. This single depth layout is unusual for an early 19th-century house, suggesting it may have been altered from an earlier design. The relationship between Nutcombe House and the adjacent Old Seaway, which is thought to have been a service wing but is now a separate dwelling, remains unclear.

The exterior of Nutcombe House is two storeys high with an attic and has a tall, symmetrical three-bay front. It features plain pilasters on the left and right sides, along with a central granite porch supported by granite Doric columns and topped with an entablature. The front door is half-glazed and dates from the 19th century, accompanied by a 19th-century overlight with diamond glazing bars. The house also boasts well-preserved early 19th-century 12-pane sash windows with margin glazing and granite sills. Additionally, there are bullseye windows with projecting architraves that ventilate the attic on each return, along with two sash windows on the left return. The interior has not been inspected but is known to retain original joinery, including panelled shutters and a 19th-century staircase.
