Description

The Thatched Cottage and Thatch End is a house that has been divided into two cottages. It likely dates from the mid-17th century, with some refurbishment in the early 18th century and a 1980s extension added to the left end. The building is constructed from whitewashed rendered stone rubble, with some cob on the first floor, and features a thatched roof that is hipped at the ends. There is an axial stack, a rear left lateral stack, and a rear right angle stack.

Originally, the house had a single depth three-room plan, with a central hall, an inner room to the right that was refurbished as an early 18th-century parlour, and an entrance to the left of the hall that may have led into a passage. The house has since been divided through the centre of the hall, creating two cottages, with a 20th-century extension added at the left end.

The exterior is two storeys high and presents an asymmetrical two-over-two window front, giving the appearance of two double-fronted cottages, with Thatch End on the left. There is a 20th-century porch at Thatch End, which features a 17th-century ovolo-moulded doorframe, and a thatched glazed porch at the Thatched Cottage on the right. The windows are predominantly two-light timber casements with glazing bars, with the first-floor window on the right retaining some square leaded panes. The ground floor right window is an early 18th-century 12-pane sash with thick moulded glazing bars, and there are two similar early 18th-century sashes on the right return.

Inside, the hall, which is shared by both cottages, features a chamfered stopped crossbeam, scratch-moulded joists, and an open fireplace in the Thatched Cottage that has a jewel step-stopped lintel and a bread oven. The right-hand room contains a rebuilt angle fireplace in the rear right corner and a fitted 18th-century china cupboard with shaped shelves. Thatch End has a winder stair with a straight flight, which is lit by a two-light 17th-century mullioned window with leaded panes. The roof timbers in Thatch End were inspected and are pegged A-frames of 18th-century character.
