Description
This building is a farm structure located immediately south of Higher Farm Farmhouse in Stokeinteignhead. It likely dates from the mid to late 19th century and is constructed from red sandstone rubble with a grouted slate roof, which is hipped at the north end and gabled at the east end. The reed-store has a corrugated roof.
The farmbuilding is arranged in a large L shape in the southwest corner of the farmyard, with the west range running parallel to Stoke Road. This section includes a cartshed with a reed-store above it at the southern end. The north-facing range, situated within the farmyard, features a threshing floor that originally operated with a traction engine, with access to the first floor from the rear.
The exterior is notably tall and lofted. The threshing barn has large paired plank doors leading to the threshing loft, flanked by stone cheeks that reach the ground, and is topped by a slated canopy. Smaller doors are located to the left and right. On the south side, there are similar large doors with stone cheeks and a porch canopy. The west range features a pentice roof on the east side, facing into the farmyard, along with a central loft door and a ground floor doorway below it, plus two windows on the right return at the north end. The rear elevation, facing the road, includes a loft door and two ground floor doorways—one small and one large—both with iron lintels. The cartshed has been modified to accommodate grain bins while retaining the open fronted reed loft that faces Stoke Road.
The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported that a threshing machine still exists, according to the owner. The building has group value with the farmhouse.
