Description
The lock at Jetty Marsh is a canal entrance lock on the disused Stover Canal, dated 1824 for George Templer of Stover Park House. This lock, along with two other stone locks in Teigngrace Parish, replaced the original timber-clad clay locks built by James Templer between 1790 and 1792, with engineering by Thomas Gray of Exeter. The entry lock at the south end of the lock basin is constructed of granite ashlar with a splayed entrance. The west side features a stone inscription: "GEO. TEMPLER ESQR. 1824." Revetment walls are recessed on either side for lock gates, which are later replacements. The large lock basin has wooden boarded earth sides, with the east side later rebuilt in brick and equipped with four cast iron bollards. The inner lock at the north end of the basin is also made of granite ashlar but has been partly filled in with a 20th-century bridge and a circa 1866 railway track from the South Devon Railway Company's Newton Abbot to Moretonhampstead line. The Stover Canal was nearly two miles long and connected to the River Teign at Jetty Marsh near Newton Abbot, allowing barges to pass through the dredged Whitelake Channel to the estuary of the River Teign. The canal was a private venture designed to transport ball clay to the Staffordshire Potteries and later to carry Haytor granite after the Haytor granite tramway was built in 1820.
