Description

Somerset Lodge is a mid-19th century house located above Rundle Road, Newton Abbot, now operating as a retirement home. The building is constructed of painted stucco with hipped slate roofs and various moulded stacks, and is of Italianate style. The plan is complex, forming an L-shape with a 20th-century block to the front. The east entrance front has a 7-window range, while the south and road front has a 6-window range, including a lower 20th-century block. Features include wide bracketed eaves, bracketed sills and imposts, and semicircular-arched one-, two- and 3-light windows articulated by banded pilasters and quoins. A 3-storey, 2-bay block to the right of the east front has paired windows to each floor, with 20th-century alterations to the inside right of the lower floors. A central 2-storey block has triple windows to the first floor and paired windows to a canted bay on the ground floor. A left-hand range is set well back, with a probable 20th-century conservatory-porch in the angle. The rear north wall is blank, while the west wall incorporates a variety of 19th and 20th-century windows. The entrance hall contains a late 19th-century segmental arch with a panelled soffit supported by three consoles on each side, and a mid-19th century open-well open-string staircase with fretted ends. A late 19th-century stained-glass stair window is also present. Windows have splayed reveals and panelled shutters (some fixed), and the ground floor left room features a decorative cornice.
