Description
The Clay Cellar is a building located on Jetty Marsh Road in Newton Abbot, constructed between 1861 and 1889. It is made of local stone rubble and features a hipped and gable-ended roof that has been re-clad in corrugated asbestos sheets. The structure has a large single-storey rectangular plan, divided internally into two spacious compartments. The front of the building has two wide entrances that are now enclosed by a 20th-century outshut.
Inside, the two compartments each consist of seven bays that open to the roof, which is supported by king-post trusses with angle-struts. This clay cellar was specifically built for the temporary storage of china clay brought from the West Golds Clay Mine, making it a rare surviving example of a building associated with this industry.
