Description
This is a canal lock located 350 metres south-east of the Church of St Peter and St Paul in Teigngrace, built in 1824 for George Templer of Stover House. It is part of the disused Stover Canal and was constructed as a replacement for the original timber-clad clay locks built by James Templer between 1790 and 1792, with engineering by Thomas Gray of Exeter. The lock is made of granite ashlar and features splayed entrances at both the north and south ends, with revetment walls that are recessed for lock gates. There are remains of later gates present. The Stover Canal was nearly 2 miles long and connected to the River Teign at Jetty Marsh near Newton Abbot, allowing barges to navigate through the dredged Whitelake Channel to the estuary. The canal was a private project intended to transport local ball clay to the Staffordshire Potteries and later to carry Haytor granite after the construction of the Haytor granite tramway in 1820.
