Description
Teign Bridge is a road bridge over the River Teign, built in 1815 under the supervision of James Green, the County Surveyor. It is constructed from local grey limestone ashlar, featuring rusticated granite voussoirs in the arch rings, granite intrados, and granite copping on the parapets. The bridge has a single span with a wide segmental arch, which includes voussoirs with chamfered rustication. The abutments curve out to square terminal piers, and there is a sharply-projecting stringcourse at road level that continues around the terminal piers at the ends of the abutments. The bridge does not have an inscription panel and is noted for its attractive masonry detail.
Beneath the current structure, the footings of earlier cutwaters are said to survive. Archaeological evidence indicates a history of bridges at this location, including remnants of a Roman bridge, an 11th-century bridge, the 'Red Bridge' from 1434, and the 'Grey Bridge' from the 17th century.
