Description

Chapel Cottage, including the adjoining barn, is a cottage that likely originated as a pair of cottages in the early 18th century, with extensions added in the 19th and 20th centuries. The rear wall is made of rubble, while the front and side walls are rendered rubble and cob. The roof is made of grouted slate and is hipped at both ends. There is a large lateral rubble stack at the center of the rear wall. Originally, it was probably two 1-room plan cottages, each heated by adjoining fireplaces served by the same rear lateral stack, with a staircase beside each fireplace. Documentary evidence shows that the property has functioned as a single dwelling since at least the mid-19th century. There are likely 19th-century outshuts at the rear and a 20th-century extension at the right end. The building is two stories high with an asymmetrical front featuring two windows on the first floor and four on the ground floor. The first-floor windows are late 20th-century aluminium-framed casements with small panes, while the ground-floor windows are similar single-light casements, except for the far left window, which is a wooden casement that was reputedly originally a door. The single-storey 20th-century extension is located at the right end. The two-storey rubble barn is attached to the left end of the house, projecting from the front wall. It also has a grouted slate roof, which is half-hipped at both ends. The rear of the barn features two wide ground floor openings with stone arches. There are two outshuts at the rear of the house, with the right-hand one being rendered and taller. Inside, the two main ground floor rooms have adjoining lateral fireplaces with undecorated cambered wooden lintels, and there is a renewed 20th-century staircase in each room next to the fireplace. The roof space has not been inspected.
