Description

SX 96 NW COFFINSWELL DACCOMBE 4/104 The Keepers (formerly listed as - Crossways) 23.8.55 GV II House, formerly farmhouse. Circa late C16/early C17 one end separated from it possibly in C18, extended and modernised in C20. Rendered cob walls. Thatched roof, hipped to left end, gabled to right. Rendered rubble lateral stack to right of front with tall brick shaft. Brick shaft to rear lateral stack. Originally 3 room and through-passage plan with rear lateral stack to lower room at left and front lateral stack to hall. Possibly in the C18 the inner room was divided off from the property (and the hall also reduced in size). C19 outshut at left end converted into another room in late C20 when it was also extended further at the rear. Lower room and passage converted to 1 room, rear passage door blocked. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front of 3-light C20 casements with glazing bars, first floor windows in small openings. Large thatched door on its left side. Semi- circular former outshut extension at left end. Interior: Fireplace to lower room has chamfered wooden lintel with double hollow step stops. 2 rough cross beams. Roof trusses are probably original and consist of very substantial straight principals with threaded purlins and straight collars halved and pegged onto the principal rafters.
