Description

The Old Forge is a house that was originally part of a larger property, which was later divided, with a forge added at one end. The forge has since been converted into living accommodation. The original part of the house dates from the late 16th century to early 17th century, while the forge was possibly added in the 18th century and modernised in the late 20th century. The original house features rendered cob walls, and the former forge has rendered sandstone walls. The building has a gable-ended asbestos slate roof, which is lower over the forge. There are two rear lateral stacks with brick shafts; the right-hand stack, associated with the original house, is a large rendered stone stack. The original part of the house served as the inner room of the adjoining property. Due to modernisation, it is challenging to determine the exact date the forge was added, but it is likely that the property was separated from the adjoining one around the same time. The forge was converted in the late 20th century. Currently, there are two main heated rooms on the ground floor, with an outshut at the front of the right-hand room. The building is two storeys high with an asymmetrical four-window front. There are two windows on the ground floor, with 20th-century two-light casements featuring glazing bars on the first floor; the far right window is a single light. The ground floor windows include a three-light window on the left end and a four-light window on the right, similar to the others. To the left of the windows, there is a 20th-century plank and glazed door. An outshut has been built onto the front of the forge to the right. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is believed to have been extensively modernised in the 20th century.
