Description
Rowdens is a house likely dating from the mid-19th century, with alterations and an enlargement in the late 19th century. It is constructed of painted stucco over brick, with a slate roof and rendered stacks to the gable ends, incorporating 20th-century dormers. The building has a double-depth plan, featuring a two-storey left wing.
The exterior presents a symmetrical three-window range to the entrance block, and a further symmetrical three-window range to the garden front, which faces east towards the sea. The entrance is located within the parapeted south gable end, which has a moulded stack to the truncated apex. A two-storey, parapeted porch with banded rusticated pilasters to the curved corners features a plate-glass tripartite window on the first floor. Below, a stone Tuscan doorcase frames a semicircular arch, fanlight and door, flanked by single-light plate-glass sash windows. A ground-floor platband runs along the left wing, transitioning into a dentil cornice above a canted bay and a tripartite window. The garden front includes a coped parapet, cornice, flat-arched windows to the first floor, and segmental arches to the ground floor. Two late 19th-century full-height canted bays, each with plate-glass sash windows, are connected by a continuous ground-floor dentil cornice, fronting a stone balustraded balcony supported by cast-iron columns.
The interior of the property has not been inspected.
