Description

Numbers 1-5 Den Crescent are a terrace of five houses, built in 1825 as part of a planned layout by Andrew Patey of Exeter. Some of the houses are now hotels. The houses are constructed of painted stucco with a freestone parapet coping, a continuous cornice, a first-floor band, an impost band to the ground floor and window sills. The doorcases feature vermiculated voussoirs and mask keystones, possibly made of Coade stone. The roofs are slate covered, with rendered stacks to the gable ends and party walls.

The houses are three storeys high with attics and basements, arranged with a 3-window front. Dormers are segmental arched with 2-lights, except for Numbers 3 and 4 which have larger 20th-century dormers. Most windows on the first and second floors are 6/6-pane sashes, some with horns. The ground floor windows feature semicircular arches and radial glazing bars, and are mostly 6/9-pane sashes. The entrances to the end houses are in the returns, while the central houses display semicircular-arched doorcases with panelled soffits, decorative fanlights, and six-panel doors; fanlights are also present to the inner doors of Numbers 2 and 3. Basement windows are 6/6-pane sashes and planked doors are paired with 3-pane overlights. Number 1 has 2/2-pane sashes to the second floor, 4/4-pane sashes to the first floor, and plate-glass sashes to the ground floor. The interiors were not inspected.

Attached railings of square section with cast-iron flambeau heads flank the steps to the doors at Numbers 2 and 5. The terrace forms part of a larger planned layout by Patey, facing the sea.
