Description
This is a group of three cottages on Mary Street, Bovey Tracey. They likely formed part of a larger house originally, dating probably to the 16th or 17th century. The cottages have solid walls, likely constructed of cob or stone and covered with roughcast plaster. The roof is covered in asbestos slates, with a yellow brick chimney stack at the right-hand end. There is a substantial stone chimney stack with a tapered top and weatherings, situated off-centre to the left, just below the ridge of the rear roof slope, with a later stone stack built up against it on the ridge. A central stone chimney stack is present on the rear wall. At the left-hand end of the roof, a hipped gablet, likely belonging to a rear wing, is visible just above the ridge. The cottages are two storeys high and have five windows across the front. The right-hand window on each floor is a 20th-century replacement, but the remaining windows are 19th-century wooden casements with three lights, each light containing three panes of glass. The ground-floor window of No. 3 has been modified. A large double plank door, seemingly serving Nos. 3 and 5, is located in the third bay from the left. No. 1 has a late 16th or 17th century chamfered wooden door frame, with a flat head and weathered stops. The interior has not been inspected, but it is likely to contain early features of interest, which may be concealed by plaster.
