Description

The garden and farmyard walls to the southwest and south of Place Barton include a footbridge over Shippen Brook and a thatched building located west of Place Barton. The garden wall runs parallel to Shippen Brook and continues as a garden and farmyard wall along the road south of Place Barton. The footbridge is situated west of Place Barton, and there is a small thatched building, likely a former privy, at the north end of the garden wall. The walls are likely from the 16th or 17th century, with some sections rebuilt along the road. The bridge probably dates to the 19th century, while the privy may be from the late 19th or early 20th century.

The walls enclose the buildings at Place Barton, which was garrisoned in the 17th century, suggesting they may have had a defensive purpose. They also appear to be part of a double courtyard arrangement with the house in the northwest corner of the site. The southwest wall ends at a thatched single-storey building that drains into Shippen Brook. A single-span bridge across the brook, located west of the house, provides pedestrian access from the house to the fields.

The exterior features tall stone rubble walls with some putlog holes. The southwest wall shows signs of rebuilding and serves as the rear wall of a 19th-century farm building. To the left, this wall has a granite archway with a cambered arch, flanked by two squat stone rubble gate piers that are round in plan and set forward from the archway. The southwest wall, which runs parallel to Shippen Brook, extends to the house, where it concludes at the small thatched building next to the 19th-century single-span bridge, which has a segmental arch and stone rubble parapets. The site has group value with the house at Place Barton and three other listed buildings.
