Description
The War Memorial Gateway, located to the northeast of the church of St. Paul, commemorates the people of Chudleigh Knighton who died in the First World War. It is made of ashlar stone and rough-hewn granite, featuring a metal gate.
The gateway consists of ashlar stone gate piers with rubble infill, topped by a three-tiered rough-hewn granite lintel, which is surmounted by a wheel cross. Inside the gateway, there is a metal gate with fleur-de-lis railheads. The outer face of the bottom tier of the lintel bears a dedication in raised black lettering that reads, ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN WHO DIED IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1918'. Below this inscription are the names of those who perished.
