Description

The summerhouse and two sets of terrace walls are located to the north-east and north-west of Stover House. The summerhouse is situated south-west of the northern end of the lower terrace and is likely part of the garden terraces created by James Templer II, who died in 1813. It features limestone ashlar fronts with rubble walls and a bitumen-painted slate roof that is gabled at the rear, with a square plan. The design is classical, featuring an Ionic distyle in antis and a low pediment above a plain entablature that continues on the returns. Inside, there is a stone floor beyond a stone plinth, with plastered walls and dwarf rubble walls on either side. Some remnants of a simple plaster cornice can be found within.

The lower terrace is likely contemporary with the summerhouse and has a retaining wall made of rubblestone topped with granite coping. Stone vases are placed at intervals along the wall, which has corner piers of granite ashlar at the salients at each end. The upper terrace's retaining walls are made of granite ashlar, aligned parallel to the north-west and north-east fronts of the house, and are coped with ashlar piers at the junction and at the steps, with stone vases at intervals. There are two flights of granite steps with plain raking strings that end in low pedestals topped with similar vases. A third flight of steps is located between the two terrace walls, making these features an integral part of the setting of Stover House.
