Description

This is a row of four shops with self-contained flats above, built in the mid-19th century. The building is located on Wellington Street, Teignmouth. It is constructed of painted stucco with painted stone dressings, cast-iron balcony railings, and a slate roof with stacks positioned on the party walls between the units. The building is arranged over four storeys, with each unit having a two-window frontage. A coped parapet and platbands (decorative bands) are visible between each floor, along with a heavy modillion cornice below the attic level, except for number 17 on the right-hand side. The upper-floor windows have moulded architraves. The attic storey has 3/6-pane sash windows. The second floor has 6/6-pane sashes with cornices and bracketed sills. The first-floor windows are tall, late-19th century 4/4-pane sashes, each set beneath a pediment supported by substantial ornamented consoles. A continuous balcony with ornamented cast-iron railings runs along the entire first floor. The ground floor incorporates 20th-century shop fronts, but retains original 19th-century doors consisting of two vertical panels with overlights. An entrance to number 17 is located in Clampet Lane, featuring a six-panel door with overlight within a segmental-arched doorcase. The doorcase has heavy, chamfered rusticated jambs and voussoirs, flanked by blind windows. Similar windows are found on the first and second floors of the Clampet Lane return. The left-hand return side of the building is blank. The two-storey rear wings largely retain original 6/6-pane sash windows. The interiors were not inspected. The building presents a distinctive mid-19th century classical facade in a somewhat elaborate style.
