Description
The pair of ash houses located immediately to the northwest of Bellamarsh Barton is likely from the 19th century. Constructed from local grey limestone rubble, these structures are tall, rectangular in shape, and roofless, showing signs of decay at the top. They flank the doorway in the garden wall at the rear of Bellamarsh Barton. Adjacent to each ash house are mounting blocks that facilitated the insertion and storage of domestic ash, which could then be removed from openings at the bottom for use on the land. The design of these ash houses is notably grand and symmetrical.
