Description

A pair of cottages, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, with later additions from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The cottages are constructed of plastered rubble walls, incorporating some cob, with a gable ended slate roof. There is a rendered rubble stack with a brick shaft at the left end, and a brick stack on a rubble base at the right gable end. The original plan may have been a single two-room house with fireplaces at each end, later divided into two cottages in the late 19th or early 20th century, when rear extensions were added. The front has an asymmetrical arrangement of windows with a 1:2 window frontage. The first floor windows to the right and centre are 20-pane sashes, dating to the late 18th century, and a 24-pane sash of the same date is positioned to the left. On the ground floor, to the right is a small-paned casement window from the 19th century. To its left is a 20th-century stable-style door with a slate hood, leading to 'The Mole Hole'. 'Coplett’s Cottage’ on the left has a horizontal sliding sash from the late 18th or early 19th century, with a 4-pane sash from the early 20th century to its right. The main doorway is at the rear. The interior of Coplett’s Cottage contains rough, unsubstantial beams and a rough, chamfered wood lintel over the fireplace.
